Websites

Services Include

  • Basic website, like this one
  • Hosting if required.
  • Maintenance.

John is pleased to make a basic website for authors to showcase their books, or specific websites to follow one story, or trilogy.

John says, "I use standard html and html5, plus JavaScript; all easily understood by other webmasters.

"Most importantly, my pages display correctly across virtually all browsers (Always problems with IE, accepted) with no special tweaks.

"I can also make what the author wants, for instance, I could not find a decent photo album, so I made one myself for Star Gazer, look here.

"This website is much larger behind the scenes, and would cost, say £350."

Introduction

I am an author. Along the way I have learned how to edit myself to the strictest standards, and am still improving, The hardest task, some might say, is 'author, edit thyself'. For me, no problem.

I am chiefly a writer who knows how to edit. I class myself as a content editor, because I edit the content of my own, and other's work. In many ways I am a junior version of Susan, but not as good, if cheaper. That stated, I produce quality work.

I will be honest, most people are not, and tell an author what is good and bad about a manuscript. Sometimes a great book can be ruined by idiotic presentation, and the whole manuscript needs to be presented correctly.

I read through a book in depth, making notes, usually with track changes on, or as comments. I will come back to any problem areas several times, until I am sure suitable options for change have been examined in full.

I also look for how the story moves along; are there dead passages that may be brilliant writing, but do nothing apart from make the book longer. I believe each line or paragraph, should contain one of: ethos, pathos, or logos. I understand what Stephen King meant, when he said, "Each word must have a place in the book, and if it does not, no matter how good the sentence, it has to go." Words to that effect. And I do understand.

I normally return to author after the first read-through, and we pick up again after corrections have been made, or valid reasons why not. I am a bit of a stickler, but like to share a joke and keep it fun.

Background

John has walked a hard road in life, one that should perhaps have been gold-plated, easy. Except, he would never kowtow to the expected of him. Instead he is his own man, and is living his one and only life, his way.

As a man of the world, he brings his experiences of different, sometimes alien cultures, to bear on his own writing, and that of others.

Other Services

Expertise

As a self-published author, John has already done it all himself. He has tried the lucky-dip of finding an agent, a publisher, and was not impressed.

"They are dinosaurs of a past age, except they don't realise it yet. I also found most to be illiterate and dismissive. Now I do it myself, and get results."

Experience

"In order to improve my chances of becoming a best-selling author, I decided to re-read a best seller; The Da Vince Code by Dan Brown.

"Chapter lengths were all over the place, and began anywhere, to save money on printing. The albino subplot was scattered about willy-nilly.

"The book itself had one glaring typo per page, for the first two-thirds of the book, and if it had been presented to me, I would have given the author a re-write."
